Your Destination Says More Than Where You Came From

Your destination says more than where you came from

We tend to define ourselves by our past and be predictable because of it, but the past does not always say very much about who we are now. Many of us learn from our past and live better in the present. This can better reflect who we are today. Your destination tells more about you than the journey you have already traveled. People are not static and immutable. On the contrary: The transformation process is a daily struggle.

There can be no transformation without the emotional element. The emotions we experience are the biggest engines behind our behavior. Our destiny cannot be changed; otherwise it would not be fate . But a person can change, because otherwise they would no longer be a person.

The goals we pursue show to a large extent who we are. Achieving our goals is not as important as what we become when we pursue them . We are in the present. So what does it mean who we were last week if we know who we are today?

“What has happened has fled away; what you hope for is absent; but the present is yours. “
-Arabic proverb-

Only 20% of our brain is in the present, it is in our past

Our brain loves to go from the past to the future and back again without stopping in the present, not even to get more gasoline on. 40% of the human brain is devoted to conjectures and hypotheses that never come to fruition. Another 40% are rooted in situations and conflicts in our past, leaving only 20% to what really matters. Namely, who we are right now. Nuet.

That is why it is so common to describe ourselves with a focus on our past. Some studies suggest that the present is an elusive place for the brain, but it can be trained. Having goals and direction makes us more connected to our environment.

The past gives us a lot of information about what we once were, but the present gives us information about who we are now. But for our brain, it is much easier to keep information from the past. After all, it has already dealt with them. Therefore, many of us have a hard time seeing ourselves as we really are, with the image in our mind that is so outdated compared to the person we are today.

Mottos like “the good old days” show us how our brains distort things from the past. The brain reinvents our memories  to make them more positive. Memory takes fragments of the present and inserts them into the past so that they fit better into the world we are in now.

“Fools talk about the past, wise men about the present and fools about the future.”
–Napoleon Bonaparte–

Where you come from is the case, but your destination is your choice

We all have a past, and sometimes the past is not the fruit of our choice. As we grow, with the control we have over our lives, we choose and shape attitudes and lifestyles that best suit our tastes and values. Knowing your destination implies that you have grown in self-control, judgment and generosity (or at least that you are capable of doing so).

Choose your destination yourself, as this woman on the way

Every choice has a consequence. If we do not like our choices and their consequences, instead of clinging to the past in our minds, we must look for a new choice and a new consequence. Is the path you choose to reach your destination always the right one? There are consequences that you may not know in advance, but “justice” lies in your choice.

We can choose to get rid of beliefs that limit us and build other beliefs that make our lives better, more fun, even more fortunate. Only ghosts remain in the past and describe themselves with their already chosen lives, lived and somehow closed. We are what we choose to be today, not what we chose to be before. That way, you choose your destination.

–Mark Twain–
