Being a captain in your own life is about knowing your emotions and your body so you can understand what it tells us. It is not easy to gain control of everything, because you are fighting against strong forces.

When we want to refer to being in control of our lives, we may come to use the term “being the captain of your own life.” Being a captain in your own life means that you know what is happening to you, that we have the ability to set the right course for ourselves.

Like ships on the water, you can sometimes feel that there are turbulent waters and you may feel the need for a pilot to steer the ship safely through a narrow dangerous water. Such we can also sometimes have it with our inner life. That explains why it’s good to be a captain in your own life.

We need someone who can read our inner charts who can look at our inner state. It is information that helps the body to be in balance (homeostasis.) The body, mind and brain are all connected to each other, which means that we not only function physiologically, but are also connected through subjective experiences such as emotions.

The greater the knowledge of our inner self, the more capacity and potential we have to control our lives. Keep in mind that if we are aware of the changes that are happening internally and in our environment, then we will be able to adapt much more easily.

The effects of losing control

A wonderful book called  The Body Keeps the Score, written by Bessel van der Kolk, states that many veterans of the war lose control of their lives. A lot of them feel locked into an environment where they learned to commit themselves using certain norms that only work during a conflict or war.

Furthermore, for various reasons, many feel insecure in their own body. An example of this is constant memories of the past, which show an inner discomfort.

Humans are addicted and many people learn to ignore their instincts and are silent about their consciousness. That said, it’s important to remember that ignoring what’s going on inside of us causes us to lose control.

Many health problems such as chronic pain, fatigue, headaches and migraines are examples of inner cries for help. All of these things can be the result of ignoring our inner signals.

We pay a high price if we are not captains in our own lives. It makes us ignore and overhear what can really hurt us. Or the opposite of what is beneficial and safe for us.

How can you be the captain of your own life?

The middle frontal lobe is the one that controls the monitoring of our body’s signals. We are currently aware that conscious meditation and yoga can help us get in balance with ourselves. But it can also help us become more aware of our body’s signals. It can make us feel stronger and take control of our lives.

The effect of somatic or bodily work can release energy where it is proven, especially people with blockages, as war veterans trapped in terror. Working to gain control of your body through physical exercise can help you better capture the messages that your body sends to you.

In conclusion, we can say that being a captain in your own life is about knowing your emotions and your body so that you can understand what it tells us. It is not easy to gain control of everything, because you are fighting against strong forces. The whole process starts with knowing and accepting oneself, in order to make one’s plan for life.
